Medical Training

In today’s modern game both hurling and football are played at an ever increasing intensity in both training sessions and competitive matches. We are seeing a higher number of sports injuries occurring on the playing field than ever before and due to today’s modern living the demand on volunteer medical personnel’s time is higher than ever before. This often leads to matches taking place at both juvenile and adult level where there is no trained medical person in attendance at the game or training session to provide medical support in the occurrence of a sporting injury.

Over the last number of year’s we have seen a large increase in the number of sporting injuries occurring during both games and training sessions. Many of the most common injuries are as follows.

  • Dislocated joints
  • Tears of the ligaments that hold joints together
  • Tears of the tendons that support joints and allow them to move
  • Fractured bones, including vertebrae
  • Muscle sprains and strains
  • Defibrillator Training

In the age we live in there is simply not enough trained medical personnel with enough free time to attend every fixture or training session so this puts the onus on the clubs and club members to make sure that there is at least one person with some medical training involved with every team right through from Juvenile to Senior grades.

There is nothing more disturbing for both players and spectators alike to see an injured player in obvious distress and team mentors running around looking for someone with medical training to see if they can help the injured player and in many cases there is no medical personnel in attendance. This is even more disturbing to watch if this happens during a juvenile game where many parents become concerned and get agitated as a child lies injured while medical help is being sought.
